Matthias Ebert is a distinguished clinician-scientist and academic leader in the field of gastroenterology, with a particular emphasis on gastrointestinal oncology and translational medicine. Since 2011, he has served as Director of the II. Medical Clinic (Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases, and Nutritional Medicine) at the University Medical Center Mannheim, affiliated with Heidelberg University. In addition, he holds a professorship in gastroenterology at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg and has been Chief of Internal Medicine and Palliative Care at St. Marienkrankenhaus Lampertheim since 2018. Prof. Ebert studied medicine at the universities of Regensburg, Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Ulm, receiving his MD (Dr. med.) from the University of Ulm in 1995 with the highest distinction (magna cum laude). He was awarded a prestigious Heisenberg Fellowship by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2002 to 2004.

Prof. Ebert served as a full professor of internal medicine with a focus on molecular and clinical gastroenterology at the Technical University of Munich, where he also led the GI oncology division at the Department of Medicine II, Klinikum rechts der Isar and was founding director of the Roman-Herzog Cancer Center (2009–2011).

His research bridges molecular science and clinical practice, with a strong focus on gastrointestinal tumor biology, biomarker development, and personalized therapy. He is one of the pioneers in patient-derived organoid modeling, having established one of Europe’s largest living biobanks of GI tumor organoids. His work includes early-phase clinical trials, molecular diagnostics, and the integration of liquid biopsies and real-time monitoring in precision oncology.

Prof. Ebert has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and holds several patents in molecular diagnostics and organoid technologies. His research has received funding from the DFG, BMBF, and the EU, and he leads multiple investigator-initiated trials (IITs).

He is a recipient of numerous awards including the Ewald Prize of the German Society for Gastroenterology (DGVS) and the Werner-Creutzfeldt Scholarship.
