GenoMiCC implements measures and structures at Heidelberg University to ensure excellent conditions for doctoral candidates and early career researchers. These include the programme heiDOCS (ensures quality assurance and quality development for doctoral researchers), the Graduate Academy (central coordinating institution for the support of doctoral candidates) and the Graduate Schools (especially The Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate Schools – HBIGS), the programme heiTRACKS (support for career on different tracks at Heidelberg University, e.g. tenure-track, including career coaching and mentoring), heiSKILLS (skills and competencies in learning, teaching, language courses) and the Young Marsilius Fellow Programme (interdisciplinary research cooperation among post-doctoral researchers on new topics). Within this framework at Heidelberg University and the Graduate Academy the School of Translational Medicine atMannheim Medical Faculty (STMM) was established at Mannheim Medical Faculty. This platform integrates all educational and training programmes in Mannheim and provides structured and certified graduate programmes (including individualised tutoring and mentoring) for students, graduate students, post-graduates, and early career researchers throughout their academic career. Accordingly, the STMM provides fellowships, grants and structured education programmes for all doctoral students. All MD and PhD students in the GenoMiCC research unit are enrolled into the STMM and the GenoMiCC mentoring programme and are supervised by a thesis advisory committee (TAC) consisting of at least two independent faculty members. TAC meetings start 6 months after starting the doctoral project and continue annually. In addition, the STMM organises monthly network meetings for all MD and PhD students to foster interaction, cooperation and networking of all graduate students at Mannheim Medical Faculty, to which GenoMiCC students will be invited. To further foster education and training for all students and researchers within the GenoMiCC core topics, we have established seminar series, summer schools and retreats.
The GenoMiCC research unit also continuously offers high-quality medical dissertation projects for MD students within the research projects and supports MD students with fellowships for 12 months. In the GenoMiCC research unit, clinician scientist positions are also funded. PhD students and post-doctorate researchers are recruited within the GenoMiCC research projects and benefit from the comprehensive programmes at Heidelberg University as well. All early career researchers and junior group leaders, including basic and clinician scientists, are eligible to apply for further start-up funding.
